At a red carpet event for Paddington in Peru, Paul King confirmed that they are in development on the script for Wonka 2.
Recently, during the red carpet premiere for Paddington in Peru in London, director Paul King responded to a question from HeyUGuys regarding the development status of Wonka 2.
“We have Wonka 2 coming up. What are you allowed to tell us about that and how far down the line are you with it?” the reporter asks. Paul King responds with “We’re very early. We’ve got about half of a draft [..] We’ve got a story that we like and we know where we want to take him”.
After a year of speculation and theories surrounding the future of the Wonka franchise, thrown even more into doubt after recent stories about Paul King’s future projects including Prince Charming, which recently is rumored to have added Chris Hemsworth as the titular character to the cast, this is the first official word on Wonka 2 and having it come directly from the director, it is now clear that Warner Bros intends to move ahead with a sequel and is already hard at work on a script.
This is unsurprising after the success of the first movie, which follows a young Willy Wonka played by Timothée Chalamet and grossed over $630 million at the worldwide box office, being lauded as a huge hit. With dreams of opening a shop in a city renowned for its chocolate, a young and poor Willy Wonka discovers that the industry is run by a cartel of greedy chocolatiers.
It is unclear who would return for Wonka 2 and with actors schedules’ looking incredibly busy for the foreseeable future, it is impossible to speculate but considering how pivotal Chalamet was in the success and critical reception of the first movie, it seems unlikely that they would go ahead without him.
The first film currently holds a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 3.2 average on Letterboxd – clearly it has held up well for fans across the globe.
Wonka stars Timothée Chalamet, Hugh Grant, Calah Lane, Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key and Paterson Joseph. The film is directed and written by Paul King and was released on December 15th, 2023. It is unclear when Wonka 2 will be releasing.
Paddington in Peru is now playing in theatres in the United Kingdom and hits U.S. theatres on January 17, 2025. Find out how long the Paddington in Peru runtime is on our exclusive.
