Following the premiere of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple to excellent reviews, the third film in Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later trilogy has finally been given the greenlight by Sony Pictures, per Deadline. The film will be the fifth in the franchise overall, and the latest to be greenlit after the first two instalments of 28 Years Later were picked up and shot as a package deal.

Alex Garland will return to write 28 Years Later Part 3 (an assumed title as the film has not been officially titled), making it his fourth film in the franchise and his 13th feature film following his upcoming adaptation of Elden Ring at A24. Danny Boyle, having previously expressed interest in returning, is a hopeful choice for director, which would make his third film in the franchise.

As for the plot and cast, the film is expected to pick up from 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which will reintroduce Cillian Murphy to the franchise as Jim. He originated the role back in 2002’s 28 Days Later, and since then has become a bonefide movie star with roles such as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders and J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is the next film out in the franchise, set to be released over Martin Luther King weekend on January 16th, 2026, making it one of the first major releases of the new year. The film will pickup after Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, which left the main character Spike (Alfie Williams) on the mainland at the mercy of Jack O’Connell’s Jimmy Crystal. The two will reprise their roles for Nia DaCosta’s follow-up alongside Ralph Fiennes who will return as Dr. Ian Kelson.
